Our mission is to permanently improve the lives of all animals through legislation, consumer advocacy, action, and education.
Campaigns
Animal Liberation’s primary work revolves around conducting research on the various animal-related industries and activities in Australia, and raising awareness on how they impact animals and the environment.

Animal Cruelty Hotline
The 1800 Cruelty Hotline (1800 751 770) is for people in Australia to report cases of neglect and/or cruelty to animals. Over the last 12 years, this service has assisted hundreds of thousands of animals.
Lobbying
Animal Liberation lobbies all levels of government and various industries complicit in animal exploitation, in an attempt to influence legislation and permanently improve the lives of all animals.
We regularly respond on inquiries, policies, and development applications, and encourage our supporters to get involved with submissions, letter campaigns, and petitions whenever possible.
Education
We spread awareness of the issues facing animals with the goal of influencing consumer behaviour and the law, via our social media, media releases, a bi-annual magazine, education talks by our Humane Education Officer at schools and universities, and the events and public meetings we run/attend.
We strive to promote healthy and ethically-conscious food, as well as clothing, entertainment, and purchase options.
Our History
Christine Townend founded Animal Liberation in 1976, based on the philosophies set out by Professor Peter Singer in his best selling book, Animal Liberation.
Societies over time have continuously challenged prevailing social views for the rights of the oppressed. Discrimination against various races and women were, at one point, a dominant social norm. Over time, an increasing number of people are recognising that other animals are individuals with unique interests and life stories. The scale of oppression, exploitation, and abuse that animals are subjected to makes the contemporary animal rights movement one of the most widespread social change movements around the world, applicable to each and every one of us in a myriad of ways.
