Bear Witness Turkey Vigil
Join Animal Liberation, Sydney Animal Save and Animal Rights Activism Sydney for a vigil to bear witness to turkeys who will be killed in preparation for the Christmas period.
From 9:30 pm on December 18, 2024, we will bear witness to animals who will be killed at a South-West Sydney turkey slaughterhouse. This single slaughterhouse kills approximately 27,000 turkeys every single week. Please email kara@animal-lib.org.au to receive the address.
We will have three trucks stop during the vigil allowing us to bear witness to the animals. Each truck can carry up to 800 sentient individuals. Approximately 90% of turkeys raised in Australia are farmed in intensive factory farms, meaning their trip to the slaughterhouse will be the only time they experience fresh air. Being transported at night will mean that they never will have the chance to experience sunlight.
Why bear witness?
Bearing witness to animals on their way to slaughter allows us to pay our respects to them, to capture their final moments and give them a moment of kindness, which they may have never experienced.Part of a global movement.
As part of the Worldwide Save Movement Network, we will be adhering to the principles of peace and respect for all living beings, and truth in our advocacy. Further details can be found in the Memorandum of Understanding (http://thesavemovement.org/start-a-save-group/mou/) and the Save Movement Code of Conduct (http://thesavemovement.org/code-of-conduct/).About turkeys.
Turkeys are inquisitive creatures and have a wide range of feelings - joy, fear, love, loyalty, pain. Australia produces about 5 million turkeys each year and sales are at their highest in December. It is estimated 75% of turkeys farmed in Australia are slaughtered for Christmas day meals. This number is growing.
Grown in filthy, windowless sheds, they are crammed in approximately 14,000 others, and will never see the light of day. They are unable to display normal behaviours such as spreading their wings, perching and dust bathing. Electric wire runs along the feeders to prevent turkeys from perching on them.
The stress caused by these farming conditions leads to neurotic behaviours such as feather pecking and cannibalism. This is managed by "debeaking" using a hot blade to burn off the sharp tips of their beaks.
Turkeys have been selectively bred and genetically modified to favour rapid growth.
They are slaughtered at just 10-12 weeks old. A drastically shortened life as they can live for 10+ years.

This is a police approved event - please ensure to adhere to instructions by the designated safety marshals on the night.

Animal Liberation's November Public Meeting Webinar
2024 is flying by, and we can't quite believe that this will be our last Public Meeting Webinar for the year. We are very excited to announce our three speakers and we would love to see you there. Animal Liberation’s Public Meeting Webinars are a fantastic opportunity to learn about our work and how you can become involved, as well as hear from other like-minded advocates and organisations whom we are always honoured to host. Our Webinars are also a wonderful way to connect with other compassionate people!
𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧: Thursday, 7 November, 2024.
𝐙𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐤: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/81192723758
Introducing our three wonderful speakers:
𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫: Alex Vince, Campaign Director - Animal Liberation.
Animal Liberation's Campaign Director and co-founder of the Coalition Against 1080 Poison, Alex Vince, brings years of dedicated advocacy experience fighting lethal animal control methods. This ground breaking and extensive work has exposed critical animal welfare issues, from state-sanctioned wildlife killing to the exploitation of animals in industrial farming.
Now, Alex is leading Animal Liberation's latest campaign, "From Harm to Harmony", working to ban deadly second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) that devastate entire food chains. With compelling evidence showing that 92% of sampled nocturnal birds contain these poisons, Alex's presentation will reveal how SGARs threaten everything from companion animals to native wildlife, and outline concrete steps we can take to break this toxic cycle. Join us for this important webinar to learn how you can help create a safer environment for all creatures.
𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫: Rosemary Elliot, President of Sentient, The Veterinary Institute for Animal Ethics.
Rosemary studied veterinary science at the University of Sydney after establishing her career as a clinical psychologist. She was an executive of the student organisation ‘Veterinary Science for Animal Welfare’ and student representative on the faculty’s Animal Welfare Advisory Committee. After graduating, her honours research led to the first published study of greyhound adoption.
Her experiences during veterinary training fostered an ambition to focus directly on animal welfare and ethics. She co-founded Sentient in 2011 and is their current President. Rosemary now combines her psychology background and veterinary skills to contribute to the animal movement through writing, public speaking, political advocacy, research, small animal veterinary practice, volunteer veterinary work and supervising DVM students on animal welfare and advocacy rotations. She is a member of the Australian Veterinary Association, Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (Animal Welfare and Ethics chapter) and also of VALE (Vets Against Live Export) and Vets Beyond Borders. Rosemary’s particular interests are animal sentience, the human-animal bond and the plight of production animals and animals used for research and entertainment. She is the proud guardian of a rescue dog named after Greyfriars Bobby. Rosemary was awarded the 2024 David Bayvel Memorial Award for Excellence in Animal Welfare by the Animal Welfare Chapter of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists.
𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫: Ryan, Volunteer Youth Ambassador - Animal Liberation
Ryan is a year 9 high school student at Sydney Boys High and has recently joined Animal Liberation in a voluntary capacity as a Youth Ambassador. Ryan and his fellow students are part of the People and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). Ryan will be speaking about his ideas on how youth can make significant change in the world and for all animals and the projects PAWS has been involved with at school since joining an animal rights committee.

About:
GRNSW’s Million Dollar Chase is advertised as the world’s richest dog race and has been running every year since 2018 at Wentworth Park, one of Australia’s deadliest racetracks.
In 2023, three greyhounds were seriously injured as protestors and advocates watched on in horror; two dogs suffered from fractured legs and one sustained a lacerated neck. These three dogs were transported to an industry vet, shockingly 45 minutes away. To the industry, this was just another day in a gambling-fuelled, brutal sport.
The greyhound racing industry is on its knees and we plan to keep it there. In May, we published images of the dangerous conditions at GRNSW’s GAP NSW Wyee facility, as well as images of injuries to greyhounds sustained from the conditions. This facility was temporarily shut down by GRNSW for repurposing as a ‘holding facility’ for more greys to be exported under the “Aussie Mates in the States” program.
Last week, we accessed the report from the former GRNSW Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Alex Brittan, with damning allegations of misconduct, animal abuse, under-reported deaths, and inflated numbers of rehomed greyhounds. We will not forget Jazzie and Carey’s stories who both died in transit. In transit, Jazzie suffered and died in agony and alone.
The gambling fuelled greyhound racing industry has always been engulfed in scandals involving animal cruelty and serious wrongdoing. While the NSW Special Commission of Inquiry’s damning June 2016 McHugh report into the Greyhound Racing Industry in NSW was a catalyst, following ABC’s exposure of live baiting and greyhound exports to China, similar scandals have festered for decades.
Despite government intervention and the publicly paid GWIC, the industry continues to demonstrate its inability to reform, and the government continues to fail all regulation attempts while greyhounds continue to suffer and die and millions of dollars of public money is wasted.
The industry repeatedly tells us that tracks are safe, and animal welfare is paramount but GWIC’s data confirms otherwise. In 2023, NSW was the most lethal state with 70 greyhounds killed on and off track and 4,212 injured at race meetings and trials – an average of 11 greys injured every single day. For the January to June 2024 period, 10 greyhounds have been killed and 2,116 injured in NSW. Most injuries include fractures to legs, neck, spine and skull.
Between January to June 2024, 50 GRNSW participants clocked up 97 charges with 135 charges against 103 participants in 2023, involving drugging, dealing drugs, physical and sexual assault, racist abuse, greyhound neglect, greyhound killing, arranging to have greyhounds killed and false statements.
Irrespective of the outcome of the current Inquiry and report due date of 13 December 2024, Premier Chris Minns has stated the industry will not be shut down. How much more greyhound suffering and death will it take for those on the public purse in our parliament, to do the right thing by these gentle dogs?
Cordina Chicken Slaughterhouse Vigil
Join Animal Liberation, Animal Rights Activism Sydney, and Vegan Action Sydney for a memorial and vigil at Cordina Chicken Slaughterhouse
Chickens are remarkable creatures, known for their intelligence, emotional depth, and unique personalities. Countless rescue stories share the different personalities of chickens, including their likes and dislikes, how talkative they are, how they form bonds with others, or mourn their friends when they pass.
Broiler chickens, who are raised specifically for their flesh, are the most slaughtered species globally, with over 70 billion killed annually. In Australia alone, more than 1.5 million broiler chickens are slaughtered every single day. Though they are typically slaughtered at between 4-6 weeks of age, chickens can live for up to 15 years. The conditions in which they are kept are often so poor that many die in the sheds before reaching the slaughterhouse.
The journey to the slaughterhouse is fraught with stress and fear for these sentient beings. Often traveling at high speeds on freeways, chickens are subjected to high winds and unfamiliar noises. They are crammed into crates, with wings and feet in unnatural and painful positions. Loading and unloading are particularly stressful stages, frequently causing severe pain and suffering due to inappropriate and rough handling.
The high stocking densities and confinement of intensive poultry production creates the ideal conditions for the spread of infectious diseases. The outbreaks of avian influenza, particularly the H7N8 strain in New South Wales and the H7N3 and H7N9 strains in Victoria, have led to the quarantine of affected farms and the culling of millions of birds.
Please note that although we cannot guarantee the presence of trucks or that they will stop for us, they are required to pause at the gate, potentially giving us the opportunity to witness the chickens before their lives are tragically taken.
Safety marshals will be present on the night and police approval has been granted.
In 2008, Cordina slaughtered approximately 340,000 chickens every week at Girraween. With a national growth rate of 3.14% annually over the past 16 years, this number has tragically increased to an estimated 563,000 chickens killed at this slaughterhouse per week.
Date: Thursday, September 12, 2024
Time: 9pm - 11:30pm
Location: Cordina Chicken, 104 Magowar Road Girraween NSW 2145

𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫: Jake Davis- Attorney- Nonhuman Rights Project
Jake Davis is a Colorado-licensed, Montanna - based staff attorney for the Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP) and lead attorney for the NhRP's Hawaii and Colorado litigation. Previously, Jake worked in Federal Court Under the Honorable S. James Otero of the United States District Court for the Central District of California), for the U.S. Government (at the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California), and in private practice (Squire Patton Boggs)
Jake will be presenting on the NhRP's work, the only civil rights organisation in the United States, dedicated solely to securing rights for nonhuman animals. Their groundbreaking work challenges an archaic, unjust legal status quo that views and treats all nonhuman animals as legal "things" with no rights. As with human rights, nonhuman rights are based on fundamental values and principles of justice, such as liberty, autonomy, equality and fairness.
Along with his work at the NHP, Jake clerks part- time for Montanna's 11th Judicial District Court. He is a proud human to a rescued pitbull dog named Archie.
𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫: Abigail Boyd- Greens MP- NSW Parliament
Abigail is a Greens MP in the NSW Legislative Council. Abigail's areas of policy interest include economic inequality, animal welfare, workers’ rights, the prevention of gendered violence and disability. She has long advocated for an end to greyhound racing, a ban on puppy farms, legislative recognition of animal sentience, and the introduction of an independent animal welfare regulator in NSW.
Abigail has introduced to the NSW Upper House a Greens Bill to establish an Independent Office of Animal Welfare, which would remove primary responsibility for animal welfare from the Agriculture Minister and ensure direct and independent oversight of the enforcement of animal welfare laws as well as the development of animal welfare policies and legislation. Abigail has also introduced several other Bills to Parliament, including her Greyhound Whole-Of-Life Tracking Bill and Animal Sentience Bill, and has been a driving force in establishing various parliamentary inquiries to expose and eliminate animal cruelty and achieve positive outcomes for animals.
𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫: Lisa Ryan- Animal Liberation's Regional Campaign Manager
Our third speaker is Animal Liberation's Regional Campaigns Manager, Lisa Ryan, who will be presenting on our greyhound advocacy campaign.
Lisa will take us through Animal Liberation's 'Greyhound Racing NSW's shameful fail' and 'Stop the greyhound death tracks' work, the swag of serious and distressing allegations levelled against the greyhound racing industry in NSW with a focus on GRNSW, GAP NSW the independent regulator, GWIC, and the recently announced NSW Inquiry.
You can learn about our active and dedicated greyhound campaigning including our behind the scenes work, our wins, next steps and how your amazing support is helping our work for the greys.
We hope to see you there,
for the animals.

𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫 𝟏: Alex Vince
Alex is Campaign Director with Animal Liberation and co-founder of the Coalition Against 1080 Poison. Alex has worked on issues ranging from the state-sanctioned slaughter of unwanted or unwelcome wildlife to the exploitation of farmed animals in animal agribusiness industries. Alex’s presentation - 'Lethal legacies: new frontiers in banning 1080 and protecting wildlife from pesticides' will provide critical updates on our ongoing battle to ban 1080 poison.
Hear from Alex about a range of new and emerging resources, including the groundbreaking nationwide audit examining the use of lethal chemical control by local governments and a red list of species at risk. Additionally, Alex will introduce Animal Liberation's new initiative targeting the threat of rat poisons to wild animalkind.
𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫 𝟐: Harley McDonald-Eckersall
Harley brings 8 years of experience as an activist and organiser for animals to FTP. At age 19, Harley co-founded the organisation Young Voices for Animals (YVA) with the mission to educate and inspire the next generation of animal liberation activists. With YVA, Harley delivered a ground-breaking education program to empower high-school students to take action for animals, as well as coordinating Australia's first Youth Animal Rights Conference.
After taking part in her first direct action during the Dominion Anniversary day of action in April 2019, Harley moved to the UK to work on messaging and strategy for Animal Rebellion. It was here that she gained experience executing large-scale acts of civil disobedience, including blockades at McDonalds four UK distribution centres; costing the company millions of dollars and affecting their national supply chain.
Harley will be speaking about Farm Transparency Project's latest campaigns including the Shut Down Slaughterhouses campaign and End Dairy Slaughter.
𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫 𝟑: Kate Luke
Kate is the co-founder and manager of Little Oak Sanctuary and is deeply committed to promoting compassion and justice for farmed animals. Kate's journey into animal advocacy began in 2011 when herself and partner James were moved by an exposé on the live export industry by Animals Australia.
This revelation led them to explore the realities of animal agriculture in Australia, which then led them to adopting a vegan lifestyle. As they lived on a small rural block of land, they began rescuing animals in need, including two tiny piglets who profoundly touched their lives. The sanctuary, founded in 2013, was inspired by one of these piglets, Little Timmy, who sadly lost his life after suffering a seizure at about 6 months of age. Kate and James honoured the memory of his strength and character by planting an oak tree over his grave.
His spirit continues to guide their mission; to plant seeds of compassion in the community through sharing the individual stories of farmed animals, who are so rarely seen as the individuals they are.
We hope to see you there,
for the animals.

𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫: Animal Liberation's Regional Campaigns Manager, Lisa Ryan, will be providing a brief update about some of Animal Liberation's recent campaigns, direct actions and submissions work and will also be providing a presentation update about our 'Breaking the camel's back' exposé, our current background work, our next steps and how you can become more involved.
𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫: Dalian Pugh was raised in bushland where his family cared for orphaned native animals. He became involved in the campaign to protect north-east NSW's rainforests in the late 1970s, and has since devoted most of his life to protecting forests and native wildlife.
He co-founded the North East Forest Alliance in 1989, and was awarded an Order of Australia in 2003 for his work protecting forests. Koalas have been a particular focus over the last decade. Dalian considers that in the midst of our climate and extinction crisis, stopping the rampant logging of all public and native forests must be a priority.
𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫: Adam Walsh became conscious of the mistreatment of animals after visiting a food market in Siem Reap, Cambodia. After discovering more about how animals are used for human benefit are treated in Australia, he changed the impact of his lifestyle and following an enlightening trip to India, decided to pursue animal advocacy as a career.
Adam has worked for the Animal-Free Science Advocacy (formerly Humane Research Australia) since 2019 as Operations and Administration Officer. During this time he has also written case studies and an Environmental Impact page which looks at the way animal-based research impacts the environment.

PROTEST the PBR Monster Energy Tour Origin
Join Animal Liberation Newcastle Chapter, Animal Liberation, and Animal Liberation Queensland on Saturday the 22nd of April and send a clear message that animal cruelty is not entertaining.
Rodeos are banned in the UK, parts of the US and the Australian Capital Territory. These inherently cruel events have absolutely no place here in Newcastle.
The PBR claims that this is the "greatest rivalry in Australian sport, a head-to-head competition of the Maroons vs Blues.
This is a competition of state vs state, mate vs mate, in the biggest bull riding competition of the year."
What a farce?!
The truth is that rodeo animals are physically provoked into displaying 'wild' behaviour such as bucking and twisting by the use of cruel devices such as spurs, electric prods and flank straps pulled tightly around their sensitive belly.
These animals suffer many kinds of injuries with some being killed as a result of their severe injuries.
Remember if you can't attend for the entire time please don't let that stop you – all support is appreciated!
Important information
It is vital that all attendees of this event strictly follow the organiser's safety advice at all times before and during the event. Anyone not adhering to safety advice will be asked to leave.

Sydney Animal Rights March 2022
On Saturday April 2nd 2022, we'll take to the streets of Sydney to protest the systemic abuse of non-human animals under Australian law.
Animals are forced to race, fight, entertain, forced to live in cages, containers, captivity, have their babies taken, their fur ripped out, and their date of death decided before they are even born.
We call for a future free from slaughterhouses, racetracks, and puppy farms. A future where 'wild' animals remain wild, where 'food' denotes produce, not flesh, and where animals are no longer viewed as commodities.
The march will be a silent protest. There will be no shouting, cheering or chanting, just the steady beat of drums.
If you support ending unnecessary animal suffering, join us on April 2nd at Belmore Park, 11:30am for a 12pm start.
Smash that 'Going' button, and 'Like' the Sydney Animal Rights March page to stay tuned for announcements.
PLEASE NOTE: This will be a lawful assembly; police approval has already been granted. We will have a police escort and will adhere to NSW Health restrictions at the time.
Protest to STOP the new Ipswich greyhound track
Join Animal Liberation Queensland in protest to stop the $40 million Ipswich greyhound track.
Racing Queensland, with the support of the Palaszczuk Government, wants to build a new greyhound racing track in Ipswich.
The proposal has been endorsed by the Deputy Premier & Planning Minister, Steven Miles, and is currently being considered using a Ministerial Infrastructure Designation process - a process that side-steps local government.
Thousands of Queenslanders have lodged objections against this, now let's keep the momentum going with a protest in Ipswich.
